OBSERVATION OF INTERNATIONAL BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY DAY 2024
Voluntary health Association of Tripua, observed the ‘International Day of Biological Diversity -2024’ on 22nd May 2024 with the support of Tripura Biodiversity Board, Agartala. The programe was focused on combating invasive species (Parthenium plant) and raising awareness about biodiversity. Fifty volunteers, including students, local residence, environmental activists and government officials participated in the weed removal process and awareness campaign at Pandit Nehru Complex, Agartala.Mr. Sujit Ghosh, Assistant Director of VHAT and Mr. Abhijit Das, Forest officer were present during the programme. Mr. Jyotirmoy Majumder ,Senior Coordinator VHAT, facelited the programme.
Removal of Parthenium plants
The removal of invasive alien species ( Parthenium ) was conducted on the way of Aranya Bhaban, Pandit Neheru Complex, all the participate actively work for the removal of Parthenium plants. Participants were equipped with gloves, masks and appropriate tools to safely uproot the Parthenium plants. The removal of Parthenium was aimed at restoring native plants and improving ecosystem and health. The initiative successfully created the targeted areas, allowing for the re-establishing of native species and reducing the allergenic impact of Parthenium on local community.Awareness Camping
We have conducted a street corner meeting as awareness camping in the side of Nehru Park, to educate the public on the significance of biodiversity, the dangers of invasive species and the role of community action in environmental conservation. Mr. Jyotirmoy Majumder delivered talks highlighting the global implications of biodiversity and importance of preserving diverse ecosystems. He discussed that, Parthenium is known for its aggressive growth, which suppresses native flora and can cause health issues for humans and animals. He also discussed on harmful effects of Parthenium, like various allergies, fever, asthma and bronchitis in human being.The observation of international biodiversity day successfully combined hands on environmental action with educational outreach. The removal of Parthenium plants and the comprehensive awareness campaign contributed to immediate ecological benefits and long-term community involvement in biodiversity conversation .
